Herentals hosts Highfield social soccer tournament

HERENTALS Group of Colleges and Schools yesterday hosted a social soccer tournament in the high-density suburb of Highfield in the capital as a way of giving back to the community.

The six-team tournament, which was played at the Zimbabwe Grounds, was won by Legends, who beat Veterans 2-1 in the final.

Tapiwa Badza, a member of the tournament’s organising committee, said they decided to host the tournament as a way of providing young people with a platform to showcase their skills.

“As Herentals we have three branches in Highfield and we thought we would support the people around it. This is our first year hosting such an event and we hope to make it an annual event in the coming years,” he said.

“This is part of our corporate social responsibility, we saw that many teenagers were resorting to drug abuse because they have a lot of spare time and we came up this event so that they have something that will divert their minds and we are glad we were able to reach that target as many teams showed up despite the short notice.”

The tournament was graced by former and current premier league players and coaches while Herentals chief operations officer Tafadzwa Benza was also in attendance.

The winners, Legends, walked away with a floating trophy plus $250 while runners-up Veterans received $170. All participating team were given appearance fees.

Tournament results:

Semi-finals: Sportsmen 1-4 Veterans, Legends 1-0 Super City

Final: Legends 2- 1 Veterans
